Detroit merchant and surveyor. Thomas Smith was a native of Wales who came Detroit about 1776. He was a surveyor and drew the 1796 plan of Detroit and surveyed the town after the 1805 fire. He complained that Augustus B. Woodward "obliged subsequent Surveyors to perform his whimsical schemes notwithstanding remonstrances." Smith was a man of education, a merchant, and in the summer of 1788 was appointed clerk of the Court of Common Pleas. He remained a British subject in...
